We are proposing to expand Belmont Quarry operations into a small portion of the neighbouring Belmont Regional Park, which is owned by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and managed by Greater Wellington Regional Council. This land would be used place overburden.
In exchange for the land we need, we are developing a land swap package that will be presented to DOC. Our intent is to transfer land we own with higher ecological value into the Belmont Regional Park. This will help enhance biodiversity, increase recreational opportunity and public access of the Belmont Regional Park.
While the land areas involved differ in terms of access and use, our goal is to ensure the overall outcome is net-positive for both the environment and the community.
The land exchange application was lodged with Department of Conservation in December 2025. A copy of the application is available on the Fast-track website.
Our Current Proposal
We have made several changes to the original proposal. These include:
Adjusting the boundaries of the land exchanged with Belmont Regional Park to avoid some specific areas where native vegetation (particularly swamp maire) and wetland is present
Excluding the low ecological value land from the package, ensuring that only areas of high ecological value is offered back
Offering additional high-quality land along the Northern Gully and Southern Gully to become part of the Belmont Regional Park and be accessible for the public
These changes mean the land areas (in hectares) we are proposing be exchanged are now:
